Purah Beeswax Wraps
A sustainable alternative
Purah Beeswax Wraps are a natural alternative to wrapping up your food without the need for single use plastics like cling film or plastic food bags. They can be used to wrap up sandwiches, fruit, nuts, crackers or herbs – or use them to cover up bowls of salad or left-overs in the fridge.
Purah Beeswax Wraps are hand made in Wales using four simple ingredients – cotton, beeswax, food grade tree resin and organic jojoba oil. Jojoba oil and beeswax contain antibacterial properties which will allow your beeswax wraps to be washed, then used again and again.
How to seal
To use your Purah Beeswax Wrap, simply wrap the item of food you wish to store and use the warmth of your hands to mould and hold the beeswax wrap in place.
How to care for your wrap
Your Purah Beeswax Wrap should last between 6 months and a year – depending on how often you use them. Wash with cold water and dish soap then hang to dry. Keep away from all sources of heat that will melt the beeswax (including hot water). Purah Beeswax Wraps are not suitable to use on meat, poultry or fish. Avoid using knives to cut things on top of the Purah Beeswax Wrap such as sandwiches as this will break down the beeswax.
Why is my Purah Beeswax Wrap sticky?
Two of the ingredients of your Purah Beeswax Wrap make your wrap sticky – the golden beeswax and the food grade pine resin. These natural ingredients allow the material to act like cling film – only without the plastic we are all trying to avoid. The stickiness will wear off after a while.
Refreshing your Purah Beeswax Wrap
If you want to keep your Purah Beeswax Wrap going for longer, position the beeswax wrap on a clean oven tray with a larger sheet of baking parchment underneath. Place in an electric oven at 140 degrees for three minutes and then allow to cool on a cooling tray. Your Purah Beeswax Wrap will now be as good as new!
Renewing your Purah Beeswax Wrap
If you would like to renew your Purah Beeswax Wrap, you will need to purchase a small block of beeswax (see my Etsy page). Place the wrap on a larger sheet of baking parchment and onto a clean oven tray. Grate a small amount of beeswax evenly over the wrap and pop in an electric oven for three minutes at 140 degrees. Take out of the oven and quickly hold up carefully from the corners for about 20 seconds. Place on a cooling tray. I like to leave my beeswax wraps cure for a few days before using them.
Can I use my Purah Beeswax Wrap for anything else?
Yes you can! Beeswax wraps are light and waterproof. They make a perfect natural storage solution for when you need to travel light. You can use the wraps around your shampoo bar, soap bar or your toothbrush – though I would probably not use them as food wraps after this!
How do I dispose of my Purah Beeswax Wrap?
If refreshing or renewing a beeswax wrap is not for you, then you can still dispose of your Purah Beeswax Wrap in an environmentally friendly way. You can either place your beeswax wrap in the compost bin or you can use it as a firelighter. Simply place your wrap around a piece of kindling wood and light your wood-burner or fire-pit as you normally would. The flammable beeswax will add some energy to your fire.
